The Itchy, Painty Guide to Your First Miniatures

Introductions

If you’re reading this blogpost, then odds are that you’re excited to join Adam and myself (BurgerTime) as we begin to paint our way through the Resident Evil miniatures live on air. When we first came up with the idea for Itchy Painty we wanted to create a safe platform for anyone to join in on as they begin their journey through the hobby. Whether you’re interested in painting Resident Evil 3: The Board Game minis with us in real time or you watch the VODs at your own pace, our focus is and will continue to be de-mystifying the process and pulling back the curtain on just how easy it can be to start your mini painting hobby. It is our hope that with our years of experience we can help you leap over common obstacles that can threaten to trip up those who are new to the hobby.

Tools of the Trade

Having the right tool for the job is important for any endeavour you might want to participate in. Throughout the series Adam and I are going to help you build a nice foundation of tools and paints that will set the scene for some brilliantly painted miniatures on your tabletop.  Thankfully most of those tools are readily available through several online outlets. Understand that suggestions posted here are offered as our personal recommendations and not necessarily “the best”, so feel free to shop around.

Starting Brush Set

Hobby Starter Brush Set - The Army Painter | SHOP - this versatile set of brushes is a fantastic set to begin your painting journey. I can’t recommend these brushes enough for any beginning hobbyist.

Miniature Holder For Painting

Citadel Colour Painting Handle - while not the cheapest on the market the Citadel mini painting handle is definitely one of the most versatile available. This handy little handle scales in size and will be able to hold the majority, if not all, of the minis you’ll see in most board games.

Paint & paint organization

As we have our own differing styles, you’ll find throughout this series that Adam and I will often use different brands and colors. We’ll make sure to post these colors a few days in advance on social media in order to afford folks who wish to paint along with us a chance to order in the colors we’re using.

Colour Primers - The Army Painter | SHOP - Before we’re able to put paint down on a mini we’ll have to prime these minis in order to ensure our paint sticks to the plastic. Army painter has a variety of colors available however we encourage you to start with a neutral color such as gray of black in order to ensure that your colors appear appropriately on the minis you’re painting.

With that said, I would like to draw special attention to a phone app that I’m quite partial to:

Paint Rack - is a fantastic tool that empowers painters with a large database of colors  and paint manufacturers. It also features color matching tools and the ability to save and export different paint sets allowing aspiring mini painters to keep track of what colors they use on their projects. It’s available for free with ads or ad free for a small one time payment. I use this app for every project and encourage you to as well.

Where and When

And there we have it. The starting tools and items you need to join Adam and I for the first official episode of Itchy Painty this Sunday at 17:00BST / 12:00EST / 10:00PST. We look forward to seeing you when we go live on Twitch!
